OpenAI Unveils Real-Time Vision for ChatGPT
What's happening?
Day Six of OpenAI's "12 Days of OpenAI" features a significant update: Advanced Voice Mode now includes Vision. This new addition, teased seven months ago, allows ChatGPT to "see" in real-time, mirroring users' visual inputs.
🔍 Essential Details:
Users with Plus, Team, and Pro subscriptions can point their mobile cameras at objects for real-time interactions with ChatGPT, or ask questions about what appears on their device screens.
Demonstrations show promising results, like accurate feedback on an anatomical drawing, although some inaccuracies remain, such as errors in answering a geometry question.
Availability is limited; users in the EU and EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) do not yet have access, and Enterprise and Edu accounts will be included from January onward.
🧐 Why It Matters:
Despite previous delays, OpenAI's update arrives as a significant development, especially with Google launching Gemini 2.0—a competitor with enhanced visual and audio processing abilities. This launch could redefine user interactions with AI, providing a more integrated and responsive experience.
🎁 Extra Treat:
A new preset Santa voice has been added to ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode, just in time for the holidays (availability of official permissions from Santa not confirmed).

Meta Tackles Rising Deepfake Concerns
Overview:
In response to a quadruple increase in AI-generated deepfakes, Meta has introduced a new watermarking technology, Video Seal. This tool marks AI-generated videos with imperceptible watermarks to safeguard original content, supplementing its existing tools, Watermark Anything and Audio Seal.
🔍 Key Details:
Open Source Technology: Video Seal is available as open-source, facilitating easy integration into other software systems. It also enables the embedding of invisible messages to trace video origins.
Robust Watermarking: The watermarks withstand typical editing methods such as blurring, cropping, and compression. However, Meta notes that excessive alterations might render the watermark undetectable.
Industry Comparison: While there are other watermarking options like Google’s SynthID, Meta emphasizes that many existing methods, designed for images, do not translate well to video.
🤓 Why It's Important:
Meta's challenge lies in encouraging developers and industry experts, who may be reluctant or already using other tools, to adopt Video Seal. To promote its adoption, Meta is initiating a benchmarking leaderboard called Meta Omni Seal Bench to showcase various tools' efficacy and is planning an educational seminar on watermarking technology at the upcoming International Conference on Learning Representations.
