OpenAI locks in an 8-gigawatt Ohio AI campus as Nvidia backs the build
OpenAI said it has agreed to secure approximately 8 gigawatts of IT capacity at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in southern Ohio. SB Energy will build, own, and operate the site under a 20-year lease; the first 800 megawatts are expected in 2028. OpenAI says the campus will exclusively host Nvidia compute.
NVIDIA puts a $105 billion backstop behind OpenAI's Ohio AI campus
NVIDIA agreed to support SB Energy's PORTS-Pike campus in Ohio, where OpenAI will lease the initial 4.25GW of IT capacity for 20 years and deploy NVIDIA's DSX platform. An SEC filing caps NVIDIA's aggregate obligation under the initial residual-value guarantees at $105 billion. NVIDIA can support another roughly 3.8GW, while the partners plan at least 10GW of new generation and phased service beginning in 2028.
Google brings sign-language translation from the lab to Pixel
Google DeepMind introduced SL2T, a multilingual sign-language-to-text model trained on more than 100,000 hours across over 50 sign languages. The model now powers ASL-to-English dictation in Gboard and Live Transcribe on Pixel 11, letting users sign searches, messages, documents, and Gemini requests. An on-device tracker converts video into pose landmarks and discards the original footage before sending coordinates for server-side translation.
Nebius revenue surges as its AI cloud buildout scales
Nebius reported second-quarter revenue of $582.3 million, up 454% from a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA of $236.2 million. The Nasdaq-listed AI infrastructure company also disclosed $5.66 billion of quarterly purchases of property, equipment, and intangible assets, illustrating how aggressively it is adding capacity. Cash and equivalents stood at $8.04 billion at quarter-end, while the company recorded a $190.4 million loss from continuing operations.
NVIDIA recruits Wall Street to finance $500B of AI compute
NVIDIA signed memorandums of understanding with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR to create independent financing platforms for AI infrastructure. The partners aim to mobilize more than $500 billion of third-party capital over time, building dedicated pools that can finance NVIDIA-based compute for frontier labs, enterprises, and AI clouds. The arrangements remain subject to final agreements.
Intel seeks $15B in fresh equity for an AI-driven expansion cycle
Intel announced a $15 billion underwritten common-stock offering and may let underwriters buy another $2.25 billion of shares. The chipmaker said proceeds could support capital expenditures and working capital while protecting its investment-grade rating. Intel tied the timing to sustained customer demand for AI compute and cited physical AI, purpose-built silicon, advanced packaging, and external wafer manufacturing as growth opportunities.
OpenAI tightens Astra controls as critical cyber capability comes into view
OpenAI said preliminary internal evaluations of its upcoming Astra model show enough progress in agentic coding and cybersecurity that the company cannot rule out the Critical threshold under its Preparedness Framework. OpenAI paused internal Astra activities that do not meet strengthened controls, including isolated test environments, restricted network and tool access, stronger weight protection, universal monitoring of agentic applications, and expanded testing with government agencies and safety organizations.
AMD's data-center revenue more than doubles to $6.7B
AMD reported $11.5 billion in second-quarter revenue, up 50% from a year earlier, while its Data Center segment reached $6.7 billion, a 107% increase. The company attributed the segment's growth to demand for EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 GPUs. Data Center operating income rose to $2.1 billion from a $155 million loss a year ago, when export-control-related inventory charges weighed on results.
Volta lands a $10B compute commitment linked to Anthropic
New AI cloud company Volta has signed a six-year strategic compute partnership worth $10 billion for a 133-megawatt deployment in Norway. Investor Andreessen Horowitz disclosed the contract while announcing its participation in Volta's $300 million financing; Bloomberg identified the customer as Anthropic. The deployment will use infrastructure associated with Bitdeer's Tydal site, giving the young provider an unusually large anchor workload from the outset.
