Metabase data apps

This skill is split into parts, one per task. Each part is a guide in its own folder, together with the files only that task uses. Paths in this skill are relative to <skill-dir>, the directory holding this SKILL.md.

Read only the parts the task needs

Every guide is long, and its rules apply only to its own task. Pick the parts from the user's request, read those guides, and leave the others unread.

The taskRead
Create, scaffold, or remove an app; the dev preview and its diagnostics feed; syncing an app to Metabase; an app-wide errorsetup/setup.md
Change an existing app's UI without new data or writes: layout, theme, SDK components, how a chart renderssetup/setup.md, from Source conventions on
Show Metabase data: tables, metrics, segments, measures, saved questions, filters, charts, the generated metabase.data.tssemantic-layer/semantic-layer.md
More than one page: routes, links between pages, the current pathrouting/routing.md
A write: a form, a button that creates, updates, or deletes, running an actionactions/actions.md
Metabase marks the app Outdated, the user asks to migrate it, or npm run typecheck or npm run build fails after an SDK upgrademigrate/migrate.md
  • Don't read routing/routing.md unless the app needs more than one page.
  • Don't read actions/actions.md unless the app writes data.
  • Don't read migrate/migrate.md unless the app needs migrating as the table says. An app Metabase doesn't mark Outdated, and that builds, needs no migration.
  • A task can span parts: a new app that shows a metric needs setup/setup.md, then semantic-layer/semantic-layer.md. Read each part when the work reaches it, not all of them up front.
  • When a guide points to another part or to a file under its own references/, read it only when you reach that step.

rde

Expert data engineering with Metabase at the center of any company's stack: explore and profile raw warehouse tables, build clean tables as Metabase transforms pinned by transform tests, build the semantic layer (models, metrics, measures, segments, metadata), design dashboards, answer questions with checked numbers, reconcile against a reference, change delivered definitions safely. Use for data work, not one mb command (metabase-cli): "make sense of my data", "model this raw schema", "set up a

rde-data-apps

Build or change a Metabase data app on an rde machine: settles what the metabase-data-apps skill needs from the local setup (the remote-sync repository, the Metabase URL, the API key rde stores, how the app reaches Metabase), makes sure everything the app reads is Library content already synced into that repository, confirms every sync step with the user, and hands the build to it. Use only when an app is asked for explicitly: "build me an app for X", "create a data app", "make an internal tool

ai-governance-checklist

A Metabase AI-governance coach, covering the controls and rollout side of AI: who may use Metabot, what it can see, what it costs, where the model runs, and the audit trail. Use this skill whenever the user wants to roll out AI analytics safely, control who can use Metabot or what it can see, set spend or token limits on AI, restrict Metabot's system prompt, audit AI usage, evaluate bring-your-own model or self-hosting options for AI, or prep for a security review of AI features. Trigger it even

ai-readiness-checklist

A Metabase AI-readiness coach, covering the data groundwork that makes AI answers trustworthy: modeling with Transforms, table and field metadata, the Glossary, saved Metrics, and marking canonical content. Use this skill whenever the user wants to check if their data is ready for AI, prep the underlying data for Metabot or the Metabase MCP server, work through an AI readiness checklist, or audit their data modeling/metadata/metrics before turning on AI features. Trigger it even if the user just
