Transitions

A transition must explain why one visual state becomes another.

Transition families

  • match cut
  • directional wipe
  • mask reveal
  • shape morph
  • scale-through
  • camera push/pull
  • whip movement
  • light-based reveal
  • object occlusion
  • particle/dust bridge
  • graphic continuity

Selection rules

Use the visual relationship between outgoing and incoming shots.

Match:

  • direction
  • scale
  • shape
  • color
  • motion
  • subject position

Timing

A transition should usually be shorter than the scene it connects unless the transition itself is the storytelling moment.

Use anticipation before aggressive movement and settle after the cut.

Avoid

Do not stack multiple transition effects. One strong transition is usually better than five weak ones.
